Let's get started,

A faux cement tile is a type of tile that is made to look like cement but is actually made from other materials.

Materials needed to DIY Faux Cement Tile Flooring:

  • Cement tiles (either premade or homemade)

  • Latex paint in the desired color

  • Water and bowl for mixing

  • Paintbrush (2)

  • Painters tape measure ruler and pencil

  • Dropcloth or newspaper to cover the surface area around your workspace

  • Optional: rubber gloves jar or bucket for paint water drying rack if homemade tiles are used (see note below) tile sealer(if using homemade tiles instead of premade) disposable cups or bowls

Note: We recommend using a homemade tile as opposed to premade because they are lighter and easier to work with. if you do use premade tiles the process is exactly the same but it will be harder to move around and transport so take that into consideration when planning your project. also, be sure to seal your tiles if you used premade ones.

5 DIY Steps to Install Cement Tiles

Step 1: Start by creating a grid of the cement tiles on your drop cloth or paper to protect your surface from paint splatters and drips. We chose to work in a 4x4 pattern but you can make whatever size grid makes your project easier so that all of the tiles will fit.

Step 2: Mix your latex paint with water according to the manufacturer's instructions. you want the paint to be thin enough so that it will easily soak into the tile but not so thin that it runs off.

Step 3: Using a paintbrush begin to paint each of the tiles in your grid. be sure to get into all of the grooves on each piece.

Step 4: Once all of the tiles are painted allow them to dry for approximately 24 hours. this may seem like a long time but trust me it's worth it!

Step 5: Remove your tape and admire your new faux cement tile floor! you can leave these as is or you can seal them with a tile sealer. if you decide to paint the tiles just be sure that you clean them thoroughly before painting. otherwise, your fresh paint job will chip right off!

Conclusion

The final result of this project is a beautiful and durable floor that looks like cement tiles but didn't cost a fortune. This is a great option if you want the look of cement tiles but don't want to spend the money or don't have the time to install a real tile floor. Be sure to clean your tiles thoroughly before painting or you may end up with chipped paint. This is a great flooring option if you are renting because it is much easier to remove than real tiles.
